After months of internal work, Pontevedra City Council are initiating their first points of contact to kick start the campaign for the involvement of Pontevedra residents in the Multisport Triathlon World Championships, which will be held in the city between the 26th of April and the 5th of May this year.
The championships has more than 4000 athletes registered so far, who will come to the city to race in the five different events: Aquathlon, Long Distance Triathlon, Cross Triathlon, Duathlon, and Aquabike, to be held on the 27th, 28th, 30th of April and the 2nd and 4th of May.
A campaign to spread information, awareness, engagement and promotion of the championships is underway. The campaign, which is being developed by the Sports Council, the city’s PR and security departments, will be done in two parts: the first part focussing on the areas where the race will pass through, informing all the residents and businesses, and asking for their support and collaboration. This area is the historical city centre, the area around the CGTD (Sports Development College of Galicia) and the Tafisa area (the brain centre of the championships). The long distance triathlon and the duathlon bike course will follow the N-550 road, going through the city and the Parishes of Lérez, Alba, Cerponzóns and Verducido.
Meeting in Cerponzóns
Residents of Cerponzóns were the first to meet with the City Council to find out in detail which roads in their parish will be used during the championship races. Sports Councillor Anxos Riveiro, and Cerponzóns Parish Delegate Pilar Comesaña, accompanied by a spokesperson for the local police met yesterday with the Cerponzóns Parish Council to offer all the information they need and to request their support and collaboration.
¨They were very receptive¨ Anxos Riveiro explained this morning, and thanked the representatives of Cerponzóns for their involvement in this great event. ¨So are the hoteliers of the city, they have also shown their support in meetings that have been held over the last few months.
¨This ´door to door´ work will also be done in the urban area of the city (residential properties and their access, garage access etc) as with all the businesses and commercial properties that will be involved in this international sports celebration.
Over the coming weeks, more than 20 meetings are planned to take place with different economic entities, neighbourhoods, markets, the Galician Camper-van Association (who requested to be active participants), hostels, hotels and other similar companies.
The local police have provided a phone number (092) to answer any questions that may arise. Residents can call this number in relation to any query they may have to which they need a solution.
Street campaign, language courses and volunteering
The second part of the campaign which will be launched in April, will be the dissemination of the biggest sporting event to be celebrated in Galicia this year. The streets will be decorated with ¨Pontevedra Worlds¨ and images of the campaign advertising the event and calling the residents to be active participants in the championship events by showing their support to the thousands of athletes who will be in Pontevedra during those days.
Informative material will also be distributed throughout the whole city so that the residents of Pontevedra can have access to the timetables and other information about the events that will be happening in different areas around the city.
At the same time, the City Council is collaborating hand in hand with the hotel industry to offer special menus for athletes and language courses for staff that will begin on the 1st of April. These courses will be held in Casa da Luz and the full course duration will last 30 hours.
Various activities are also programmed related to the world of volunteering, so that our visiting athletes will take with them the best possible image of the city and so that the people of Pontevedra can enjoy the championships to the maximum.
