Pontevedra’s most natural surroundings will be a highlight of the Triathlon Cross World Championship

On Tuesday, 30th April 2019, the Triathlon Cross World Championship will take place in the surroundings of Pontevedra.  It will be a race for nature lovers, who will ride and run along rural paths and tracks very close to the town centre, surrounded by vegetation and the beautiful green environment so characteristic of Galicia and Rías Baixas.
The race course, which promises to be both demanding and fun, was put to the test on the 26th August 2018 during the Triathlon Cross Spanish National Cup, which served as a test event prior to the Triathlon Cross World Championship, and received great feedback from both athletes and ITU officials who were at the event alike.  The beauty of the landscapes, the conditions and the infrastructures of the settings for each of the races are very important issues for the Multisport World Championships.  All information about the Triathlon Cross World Championship race course can be found on the website: https://pontevedra2019.org/itu/

Each section of the Pontevedra Triathlon Cross World Championship will consist of one lap only.  The transition area and the main competition area will be located by the river on Avenida Buenos Aires, where the paths and tracks that follow the river start, forming part of the race course.  The one kilometre swim will be in the Lerez river right by the big white bridge called Puente de los Tirantes.

The 30km bike section will be especially enjoyable for mountain-bike specialists.  With hardly any flat parts on the course, there will be no time to rest!  The course will take athletes on a technical but not too difficult 14km route of up and down hill tracks, along mountain paths and trails, into the forest and sports area around Pontillón De Castro reservoir and through Verducido village before returning to Pontevedra.  Along the way there will be a bike repair point and a drink station.

The ultimate 7 kilometre run of the Triathlon Cross World Championship will also be in nature.  The predominantly flat trails along the river Lerez and the river’s beach will become the run course with some slightly more demanding paved and road sections, before returning to the finish line next to the bridge ‘Puente de los Tirantes’ and the heart of the town.

Registration is now open via each country’s national federation and the closing date for registration is 27th March.

Spanish athletes with a FETRI license will benefit from a 40% discount on the official registration price of the event until 31st January 2019. Click here for registration page: Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón Larga Distancia- Pontevedra
